Colophon Record An instrument of the
Objects of Affection Collection

The independent evidence layer for luxury

Where marketing asserts, the Record shows the working.

Luxury is losing the right to assert. Colophon Record is the independent record it now has to answer to. It reads a luxury object against the public record and shows the working on its economics, materials, markups, and provenance: what an object costs to make against what it sells for, and what can be opened and checked versus what is only asserted. One instrument, two rooms. Collectors use it to see through the spectacle before they buy. Ateliers use it to stand inside the record before the law requires everyone to. When a claim cannot be grounded, it is withheld rather than invented.

Put to the Collection

QHow does the luxury object conceal the labour that produced it?

The finished commodity presents itself as a relation between things, so that the social character of the labour that made it appears as an objective property of the object itself1. The Collection reads the luxury piece as a Hollowed Object: its surface is perfected precisely so the hands, hours, and material conditions of its making recede from view2. What is sold as the autonomy of the object is, read closely, the erasure of the maker's contract3.

The signature move

It puts a number on the spectacle.

Name a luxury object and the Record exposes the distance between what it costs to make and what it sells for, the markup the marketing is built to hide. The Hollowed Object, estimated from public trade data and read against the Collection's own studies.

A worked example, not an object we hold
Exotic-leather top-handle tote, an unnamed luxury house
Retail
Material & labour, estimated
Spectacle multiple

A worked example, not a real object and not one of ours. It models the market from a curated public-trade reference table (HS commodity classes), not a live per-object CITES or UN Comtrade trace; not audited. The instrument shows its working.

How this is figured

Why it is different

Built on conduct a marketing team cannot copy.

We show the working

Every Arena answer is grounded in passages the instrument has retrieved and cited to the paragraph. Where the record is thin, it withholds rather than invents. The Spectacle Multiple puts a public number on what an object costs to make against what it sells for.

On no one's side but the record's

The Record is paid by the readers and makers who use it, never by the houses it examines. Independence is the product, not a disclaimer at the foot of the page.

We anchor, so the record cannot be quietly rewritten

Findings are written to a hash-chained ledger and anchored to Bitcoin through OpenTimestamps. Only the hashes go on the chain, never your data, so what was recorded can be checked and not rewritten after the fact.

The specification behind it

A colophon states what is known. A lacuna states what is missing.

A colophon is the printer's mark at the end of a book, stating who made the thing and how. A lacuna is the declared missing portion. Colophon Record is the instrument. Lacuna is the specification it writes to, and we have published it so anyone can build to it without us.

A provenance record is custody over time. It is not authentication, which is a claim about an object at a moment. The record states what it does not know rather than leaving a field blank, because a declared gap can be audited and a blank cannot be told apart from nobody having looked.

It is a specification, not a standard. By its own section 12 it becomes a standard when someone other than its author implements it, and not before. Read it: doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.22063353 or see what it requires.

Two ways in

Access the instrument, or engage us.

The tiers above are access to the instrument: you run the evidence yourself. What follows is access to us. A retainer puts our analysts on your questions; a licence puts a slice of the record inside your own systems. Neither is self-serve, and neither carries a shelf price. Each is arranged, and costed, in conversation.

Advisory retainers, we do the work

  • Quarterly Pulse Four quarterly $MMR snapshots on your own objects, with a round of methodology-paper credits. Available on request
  • Tactical Quarterly Eight quarterly snapshots, two adversarial ingestions, and four named office-hours. Available on request
  • Sovereign Embedded A dedicated analyst, regular $MMR roll-ups, custom Phase-Lag forecasts, and a joint-authored methodology paper. Available on request

Dataset licences, a slice of the record

  • CITES ledger, 50-year trailing The CITES HS 41/42/50 trade ledger, half a century deep. A sanitized academic licence. One-time Available on request
  • Aggregated $MMR ratios $MMR ratios across more than 100,000 objects, carrying no raw material data. A newsroom licence. One-time Available on request
  • Material Pulse The anonymized quarterly Material-Pulse dump. A bulk licence. Renewed quarterly Available on request
  • Adversarial Ingestion Snapshots from the Adversarial Ingestion Engine. A trade-press licence. Renewed quarterly Available on request

Derivatives and slices, never the Collection itself. We license access to the record, not a copy of it.
